SAFETY

What is Ketamine and is it safe?

Ketamine is a medication first used for the purpose of anesthesia. More recently we have discovered the therapeutic benefit of Ketamine infusions for mood and pain disorders. Ketamine is not a cure and should be viewed as a tool to decrease suffering, both mentally and physically. Ketamine is a very safe medication when used as prescribed from a trained practitioner. Ketamine got a bad name when it started to be used in the party scene and was referred to as Special K. It is important to remember that any medication can lead to harm, even death when used inappropriately.

Can I stop taking my pain or anxiety medication if I use Ketamine Infusions?

The answer to this varies and depends on your response. We do not recommend stopping any medications without discussing it with the person who initially prescribed it to you. As we walk with you to find relief of suffering you will continue to see your therapist, psychiatrist, pain management providers and discuss the need to continue or discontinue your medications.

Expectations

What to expect from Ketamine Infusion?

We will start with an in-depth assessment to fully understand your health history and make sure you are a good candidate for therapy. We will go over how to prepare for your infusion. You cannot drive after an infusion and will need to arrange a ride home. Everyone starts with a loading series of infusions. Usually 5-6 infusions within 3-4 weeks. The goal of a Ketamine infusion is to have the feeling of disassociation from the body. This may sound scary at first, but many people report a feeling for contentment and peace during infusions. We have created a healing space in our office so that you feel comfortable and secure. We provide eye masks, blankets, and music to enjoy during your infusion. You will likely feel tired and slightly disoriented after the infusion and need more sleep than usual. Some people have a “ketamine flare” after the first few infusions, which means symptoms of anxiety or pain get worse. This can feel discouraging at the time but is seen a sign that infusions are working. Many times, after the first 2-3 infusions, a person starts to feel the relief they are looking for!
