Exploring Calcium Blood Levels, Weight Loss and Hormone Balance at Hummingbird Healthcare
I recently came across a research study that caught my attention. It showed that increasing calcium in the diet whether through supplements or calcium-rich foods, could significantly support weight loss especially in that stubborn abdominal region! If you are curious and want to read the full research here it is: PubMed Study.
Calcium and Weight Loss—Really?
I know what you are thinking: Really… just eat more calcium and poof! All my years of struggling with weight disappear?
Well, yes and no.
Before you add calcium rich foods or supplements to your routine, it is very important to know where you currently stand. Here is where things get a little tricky. While most people assume that calcium blood levels on a basic lab test will tell the full story, that is not necessarily true. The body does an incredible job of keeping blood calcium levels steady and when they do shift either high or low, it’s often a result of secondary issues like parathyroid dysfunction not dietary intake.
So, what should you do instead?
How to Check Your Calcium Intake the Right Way
The best and most accurate way to understand your calcium intake is to evaluate your diet. I recommend using this easy calcium calculator from the International Osteoporosis Foundation: Calcium Calculator
Bookmark it. It’s super helpful when you're planning meals or want to go beyond the usual milk and cheese routine. There are many more calcium-rich foods out there that can support your wellness goals, especially if you're working toward sustainable weight loss or aiming to improve hormonal health.
What Did the Study Actually Say?
Back to that study. It showed that people who increased calcium in their diet (especially from food rather than supplements) experienced significant weight loss, especially from the abdominal area. Even more interesting, the best results occurred when calcium intake was paired with a calorie deficit of 500 calories per day.
In other words, calcium supplementation alone won’t override an unbalanced diet or lack of physical activity, but it can be a powerful support tool when combined with healthy habits.
What About Calcium Supplements?
If you're considering supplementation, here’s what I usually recommend:
- 800 mg of calcium carbonate
- 400 mg of magnesium
- Vitamin D3
These nutrients work best when taken together with food, enhancing absorption and ensuring your body can actually use the calcium you're giving it. And yes, quality matters when it comes to supplements.

The Connection Between Calcium, Hormones and Weight
Here’s something I talk about with many of my patients: weight gain, fatigue and stubborn belly fat are often connected to hormone imbalance, especially during perimenopause and menopause. That’s why I always take a holistic approach.
Calcium doesn’t just support bones but it also plays a critical role in hormonal signaling and that matters when we talk about Hormone Replacement Therapy and women’s hormone treatment options. Your body needs balance to operate efficiently and when hormones are off, everything from metabolism to sleep to mood can be affected.
Calcium alone won’t fix all of that but combined with proper hormone support whether through bio-identical hormone therapy, supplements, or nutrition, it can make a big difference in how you feel and how your body responds to efforts like weight loss.
